If you are planning your next winter holiday there are a mind boggling array of resorts to choose from. You may have only one ski trip to look forward to each year and so you have an important decision to make. Before you are seduced by a resort that you have seen in a glossy brochure, think carefully about what you really want or need. Make the most of your hard earned cash by doing your research to find a resort that suits you and the rest of your party. The best choice might not be the obvious one.
Budget
There is no getting away from it. Skiing is an expensive pastime that would challenge most budgets, especially if you are trying to finance a summer holiday as well. The prices of flights, accommodation and lift passes vary dramatically so make sure that you have considered all of the potential costs before making your choice. It is always going to cost more to cross the Atlantic that to fly to Europe. Prices are generally dictated by demand and so popular, high profile resorts like Val D’Isère and Zermatt will always be more costly. If you are on a tight budget then rule out the USA and Canada and head for Europe. Look for lesser known resorts like Nassfeld in Austria or head for Slovenia, Bulgaria or Poland for some great deals.
Terrain
There is no point paying a premium at a top resort if you are just starting out. Your lack of ability will prevent you from making the most of what is on offer and so you will be paying for access to terrain that you cannot ski. On the other hand, if you are an expert skier with a need for speed then you should look for resorts with challenging terrain and great off piste opportunities. You should also think about whether you prefer tree lined runs or more open areas. Do you like lots of long runs or will your fitness level confine you to shorter bursts of activity? If you are travelling in a group with mixed tastes and abilities then you will need to look for a larger resort with a variety of terrain.
Ambiance and Après Ski
If the skiing is the be all and end all of your trip then the nature of the resort isn’t an issue. However, if your idea of the perfect holiday is one in a picturesque village with old world charm then don’t choose a modern, purpose built resort! Decide whether you would most enjoy a quiet location or if a party town is more your bag. If you are looking for peace and serenity then St Anton would be a mistake. If you tend to dance till dawn then don’t head for Nassfeld where there is little action after dark.
Non Skiers
You might be keen to head onto the slopes but your family and friends may have other ideas! If you have non-skiers in your party then look for resorts which have plenty to keep them occupied and entertained. Spas, sports centres, indoor water parks, dog sledding and winter hiking trails will make all the difference to non-skiers. If you are hiring a car then non-skiers will appreciate a resort with easy access to towns and cities that offer great shopping and exciting tourist attractions.
No ski resort can be all things to all people. You probably won’t even find a resort that is absolutely perfect for you, if only because the ideal destination is also likely to be expensive. However, by assessing your priorities you will be able to find a great location for a ski holiday to remember.
